Montana Windstorm

Strong winds on Dec. 17 caused outages across Montana. Our crews are hard at work restoring power.

Check your meter mast and base

Heavy windstorms can damage the meter bases and masts on customers’ homes and buildings.

If a customer’s meter base is damaged, the property owner needs to contact an electrician to make repairs before service can be restored. Even if you can clearly see where a meter base or meter mast is damaged, never attempt to make a repair on your down. Up to 240 volts of electricity in a service line could cause severe injury and could start a fire. Repairs can only be made by a licensed electrician.

For Montana customers, Energy Share is available for qualifying customers with energy emergencies that may need financial assistance. Customers should contact their local HRDC office for more information.

Saturday morning update:

(please note – this will be our final update regarding this wind event):

Crews continue repairs across our Montana power system damaged by the statewide Dec. 17 windstorm.

As work is completed on transmission line and substation repairs — which bring power to the local distribution system — crews and equipment can be shifted to fix distribution lines and individual service lines.

Crews are working on powerlines in Western Montana, the Lincoln and White Sulphur Springs areas. Service teams continue to address tickets for repairs to service lines for customers’ homes and businesses.

Work will continue until all customers are back in service.

For outage information and to report an outage, visit our online outage map or call 888-467-2669.

Safety is our top priority. Stay well away from downed or low hanging power lines and treat every line as energized. If you see an electrical hazard, report it immediately.

The support you have expended to our team working in challenging conditions during this historic wind event is both appreciated and humbling.

Friday evening update:

Crews have made solid progress today on repair and restoration work, resolving more than 90% of outages caused by the Dec. 17 windstorm. Work will continue until all customers have service restored.

The crews made great advancements today, yet there’s still more to accomplish. Some customers in Montana have been without power since Wednesday night. In other areas where power has been restored, some individuals and small groups of customers are still without power.

For some customers in Western Montana and the Helena area, power restorations are taking longer due to extensive repairs, and some outages may continue through the weekend. We appreciate your patience as our crews diligently work to get everyone back up and running.

If you’re still out of power, please ensure you’re signed up for notifications to receive outage updates and visit the outage map for the most up-to-date information.

Stay away from downed power lines

Coming into contact with a power line can be deadly. That's why it's important to assume that all power lines, whether in the air or on the ground, are energized.

Strong winds, ice and heavy snow can lead to downed power lines. If you see a downed or damaged power line, keep your distance and call 911 immediately. Never touch a power line or any object, including trees, that is in contact with a line.
