NorthWestern Energy Upgrading Natural Gas Transmission Line near Helena

Date: Aug 14, 2026

TYPE: News

Helena, Mont. – Aug. 14, 2026 – NorthWestern Energy is upgrading approximately 5.5 miles of natural gas transmission pipeline from the Silver City area near Lincoln Highway south to the Helena Junction area. The project will strengthen the natural gas infrastructure that serves customers in the Helena area.

The project, located west of Birdseye Road, replaces existing 40-year-old natural gas transmission pipeline within the existing pipeline easement.

The permits required for the project are secured. Construction started the third week in July and is expected to be completed about mid-October.

Natural gas transmission pipelines transport natural gas from supply sources to local distribution systems that serve homes, businesses and communities.

After the upgraded pipeline is installed, NorthWestern Energy will restore the project area.

Upgrading the pipeline in this section will:

  • Support safe and reliable natural gas service for customers in the Helena area.
  • Maintain the infrastructure that delivers natural gas to homes, businesses and communities.
  • Improve the long-term reliability of the natural gas system.
  • Meet federal pipeline safety requirements.
  • Support reliable energy service for current and future customers.

By upgrading this section of pipeline, NorthWestern Energy is strengthening the infrastructure that customers depend on for natural gas service.
