NorthWestern owns and operates a diverse generation fleet of wind, water, natural gas and coal-fired resources and the high-voltage electric transmission system and distribution system. We also own and operate natural gas production, transmission and distribution systems.

NorthWestern Energy Urges Safety Ahead of Montana Winter Storm

Butte, Mont. – Oct. 10, 2025 – With heavy snowfall forecast across parts of Montana this weekend, NorthWestern Energy reminds customers to stay safe and be prepared for winter weather.
“Our job is to deliver the energy our customers rely on safely and reliably—especially through Montana’s changing seasons,” said Jason Merkel, NorthWestern Energy Vice President of Distribution. “Our crews work throughout the year to strengthen our energy infrastructure. Across 25,000 miles of power lines, we’ve prioritized vegetation management, replaced poles and lines, and made upgrades to ensure our system remains resilient. We are committed to delivering reliable energy service you can count on.”
NorthWestern Energy provides electric energy service to 224 communities and surrounding rural areas across the state. Crews are fully equipped and staffed to respond quickly if outages occur and will work safely and efficiently to restore service.
The National Weather Service anticipates heavy snow accumulation in many areas. NorthWestern Energy encourages all Montanans to take precautions and report downed or damaged power lines immediately. Stay at least 30 feet away from any fallen lines and call NorthWestern Energy at once.

- Avoid downed power lines and report them immediately.
- Prepare emergency kits with flashlights, batteries, water, and non-perishable food.
