NorthWestern Energy Files to Lower Temporary Electric Rates Effective July 2
Date: Jul 3, 2025
TYPE: News
Butte, Mont. – July 2, 2025 – NorthWestern Energy filed, and the Montana Public Service Commission (PSC) accepted, revised electric rates to reduce the temporary electric base rates in effect since May 23. This lower rate is taking effect on July 2 and will remain in place until the PSC makes a final decision on our regulatory rate review.
The new temporary rate reflects a partial agreement reached with several key stakeholders, including the Montana Consumer Counsel (which represents customers in PSC hearings), the Montana Large Customer Group, the Federal Executive Agencies, and Walmart Inc. It also includes NorthWestern Energy’s proposals for the remaining unresolved issues.
For a typical residential customer using 750 kilowatt-hours per month, this change means a monthly bill reduction of $4.48, compared to the temporary rate that began on May 23.
Energy rate adjustments, including increases or decreases, occur frequently and are consistently communicated through customer bills.
This news release addresses the recent media coverage of our rate review process and corrects misinformation about NorthWestern Energy's rates. Providing reliable energy 24/7 is complex, and customers deserve accurate and transparent information about their electric rates.
Our investment decisions focus on maintaining reliability and safety, while keeping bills as low as possible.
If the Montana PSC’s final decision results in a lower rate than what’s being charged, customers will receive a refund through their bill for the difference – with interest.
If you’re concerned about paying your bill, reach out to us right away. We have billing and payment options that can help.
