NorthWestern Energy’s Hauser Facility Earns Third OSHA VPP Star for Outstanding Safety

Date: Jun 25, 2025

TYPE: News

Helena, Mont. – June 25, 2025 – NorthWestern Energy is proud to announce that its Hauser hydroelectric facility has earned its third Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star recertification from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). This prestigious recognition highlights the facility’s exceptional safety standards and strong employee involvement.

“Our employees are the heart of our safety culture,” said Brian Bird, President and CEO of NorthWestern Energy. “The Voluntary Protection Program is a true partnership with OSHA’s compliance assistance branch. Through VPP, we invite OSHA into our facilities—not for enforcement, but to collaborate and improve.”

The VPP Star is OSHA’s highest honor for workplace safety.

Originally certified in 2011, Hauser has now been recertified in 2014, 2019, and 2024. Over the past three years, the facility has maintained a perfect safety record with zero incidents—far better than the industry average of 2.5.

Hauser’s success is built on the four core VPP principles:

  • Management Commitment and Employee Involvement
  • Worksite Analysis
  • Hazard Prevention and Control
  • Safety and Health Training

Hauser is one of four NorthWestern Energy hydroelectric facilities recognized with OSHA’s VPP Star status, along with Holter, Madison, and Thompson Falls. Statewide, only 12 worksites in Montana have earned this top-tier safety designation.
