We serve gas and electric to customers in the western two-thirds of Montana and eastern South Dakota. We also have gas service in Nebraska, and serve electricity to Yellowstone National Park.

We own and operate a diverse generation fleet of wind, water, natural gas and coal-fired resources and the high-voltage electric transmission system and distribution system. We also own and operate natural gas production, transmission and distribution systems.

Our Natural Gas and Electric Service

NorthWestern Energy serves 318 communities in Montana, South Dakota and Yellowstone National Park with safe and reliable electricity. We serve natural gas to 183 communities in Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska.

Our Hydro Facilities

Our carbon-free hydro system is the foundation of our energy generation portfolio in Montana. In 2021, 33% of our electricity for Montana customers came from our hydro facilities.

NorthWestern Energy crews working around the clock after South Dakota extreme storms

Sioux Falls, S.D. – May 13, 2022 – NorthWestern Energy crews continue to work around the clock to repair damage caused by extreme weather Thursday evening in eastern South Dakota. About 9,500 customers lost power during the storm and service is restored to more than 8,200 of those homes and businesses.

Crews are replacing broken power poles, repairing downed power lines and other damage.

Stay away from all downed and damaged power lines and report them to NorthWestern Energy at 800-245-6977. Look up and look out when cleaning up after this storm for power lines when using ladders and other equipment.
