NorthWestern Energy files to decrease propane rates in Townsend, Montana

Apr 30, 2020

Butte, Mont. – April 30, 2020 – NorthWestern Energy has filed with the Montana Public Service Commission a request to adjust propane supply rates for its Townsend, Montana, propane service.  NorthWestern Energy requests approval on an interim basis effective June 1, 2020, pending final Commission approval.

Propane supply costs are adjusted on an annual basis based on the contracted market supply price along with any over or under-collection of the previous year’s contract.

If approved, the summer rate, including supply and delivery charges, will decrease from $1.07 cents per gallon (equivalent of $0.94 cents per therm) to $0.82 per gallon (equivalent of $0.75 per therm) and the winter rate will decrease from $1.25 per gallon (equivalent of $1.14 per therm) to $0.99 per gallon (equivalent of $0.91 per therm).

The overall cost adjustments translate into a total bill decrease of $6.95 per month during the summer season for a typical residential customer using 30 therms and a total bill decrease of $21.82 per month during the winter heating season for a typical residential customer using 80 therms. The actual decrease will depend on each customer’s usage.

NorthWestern has 593 propane customers in Townsend. NorthWestern does not have propane service in any other Montana community.
