Rate Comparison Tool

NorthWestern Energy historically has had rates that are among the lowest in the nation. If you are planning to relocate your family or business, use our online rate comparison tool to help you estimate the cost difference of your monthly electricity and/or natural gas bill. Or click on one of the maps to enlarge it to see the electric or natural gas rate comparison at a glance.

Step 1. Select type of service and energy usage.

• Residential
  • Electric based on 750 Kilowatt Hours (kWh) per month
  • Natural gas based on 10 Dekatherms (Dkt) per month
• Small Commercial
  • Electric based on 1,000 kWh per month and 3 Kilowatt (kW) Demand
  • Natural gas based on 20 Dkt per month
• Medium Commercial
  • Electric based on 14,000 kWh per month and 40 kW Demand
  • Natural gas based on 40 Dkt per month
• Large Commercial
  • Electric based on 180,000 kWh per month and 500 kW Demand
  • Natural gas based on 100 Dkt per month
• Small Industrial
  • Electric based on 650,000 kWh per month and 1,000 kW Demand
  • Natural gas based on 1,000 Dkt per month

Note: A Dekatherm (Dkt) is equal to 10 therms. To convert natural gas sold in MCF to Dekatherms use this formula: MCF x 1.0250 = Dekatherms.

Step 2. Select electric service by city to compare.

• From the drop-down menu, select the city closest to where you currently live. The electric service provider for that area and the rates are displayed automatically.
• From the drop-down menu, select the city closest to where you are planning to move. The electric service provider for that area and the rates are displayed automatically.

Step 3. Select natural gas service by city to compare.

• From the drop-down menu, select the state closest to where you currently live. The average natural gas rates for that state are displayed automatically.
• From the drop-down menu, select the state closest to where you are planning to move. The average natural gas rates for that state are displayed automatically.

Note: Electric rates are as of July 2007 as published in the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) Typical Bills and Average Rate Report. Natural gas rates are state-level averages as of July 2007 from the Energy Information Administration Department of Energy Web site www.eia.doe.gov. NorthWestern Energy natural gas rates shown for Montana, Nebraska, and South Dakota are actual rates as of July 2007. The rates used for this tool are updated semiannually. NorthWestern Energy rates are subject to monthly natural gas fuel or electric supply cost adjustments. The most current NorthWestern Energy rate for Montana, South Dakota, and Nebraska are published on our Web site.
