More Storm Restoration Facts

Aug 11, 2015 |

When you’re out of power, you want to know when it will be restored. Under normal circumstances, we can provide you with a pretty good estimate. However, major storm damage is, thankfully, not a normal circumstance.

We have technology on our system today that gives us a pretty good idea of the extent of the problem before a crew heads out, but with widespread damage the picture is less clear. When the damage is severe, as it is the Missoula area today (August 10-11, 2015), we’re simply dealing with so many problems at once that it’s almost impossible to tell you with any degree of accuracy when power will be restored to your home.  There are several reasons why. First, you may be dealing with more than one problem. When an entire neighborhood is out of power, other problems don’t become apparent until we get that problem fixed first. So, another fix or two may be required before power is restored to your home.

Trees take a lot of time to clear from lines. Every tree is unique and typically the ones that get uprooted in a storm are large. We can’t say for sure how long it will take to remove the tree or trees (there’s no average) and the tree crews have to finish their work before the power crews can restore service.

Also, in these situations, crews are working from job to job. It’s difficult to know exactly how long each repair will take because they often don’t know what they’re dealing with until they see it.  It can take just as long, if not longer, to restore service to a few homes as it does to an entire neighborhood.

So, in these situations, we simply can’t give you an exact time and we know it’s frustrating. Be assured that we’re working on it and will get to you as quickly and as safely as possible.  Here’s a tip though: If your neighbor has power and you do not – and you have NOT previously reported the outage at your address – please call us so that can get it fixed.
