NorthWestern Celebrates Past and Future with General Office Time Capsule

Sep 14, 2015

Butte, Mont. – Sept. 14, 2015 – NorthWestern Energy, joined by state and local leaders, today celebrated the company’s past and future with the placement of a time capsule in the cornerstone of the company’s new General Office building in Butte.

“We’ve come a long way on the building construction since the ground-breaking ceremony in May 2014,” said Bob Rowe, NorthWestern Energy’s CEO. “We thank the many partners who have worked together to bring this project to this important milestone. The Medical Arts building that once stood on this important corner is part of Butte’s history. This building will be part of Butte’s future.”

The time capsule contains about a dozen items. Representing the past are historic photos of the old General Office building, and a copper bar and cookbook created to celebrate NorthWestern’s centennial in 2012.

Providing a 2015 snapshot of NorthWestern are pieces that outline the company’s current operations, generation capacity, the utility’s distribution network, an organizational chart, and photos of a company truck, meters and other items used by employees.

Other interesting items in the capsule include a NorthWestern stock certificate, a smart phone, an incandescent light bulb and a 5HO1 key, which provides access to many of the company’s facilities.

The company asked for suggestions for the time capsule contents from NorthWestern employees.

The five-story, 100,000-square-foot building is under construction at the corner of Park and Main streets in Uptown Butte. Completion is expected late in 2015. The $27.5 million structure will replace the existing General Office building at 40 E. Broadway, a structure that has been in use since at least 1912. About 225 employees will work in the new building.

Mosaic Architecture designed the building. Dick Anderson Construction is the general contractor. A significant number of Butte-area subcontractors and workers have been involved in the project.

Employees will begin moving into the new building in December. A formal dedication of the new building will likely take place in January 2016. NorthWestern is working with Butte-Silver Bow officials and others to find a new use for the building at 40 E. Broadway.
