Lighting Calculator More Information About Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs)
The new generation of ENERGY STAR qualified compact fluorescent lighting is longer lasting, brighter, and much more efficient than lighting of the past. New compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) cast a warm and inviting glow without the flickering and humming of previous generations. ENERGY STAR qualified lighting is diverse, versatile and elegant, with an energy-efficient solution for almost every lighting fixture type and any design need.

  • ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs save up to 75 percent in energy consumption compared to standard bulbs.
  • ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs last as much as 10 to 12 times longer than traditional lighting.
  • ENERGY STAR CFLs are ideal for places where the lights are on for at least three hours a day or for difficult to reach areas.

When shopping for CFLs, keep the following in mind.

  • Check the package to see if the product is appropriate for your use — table lamps, enclosed fixtures, recessed cans, bathroom light bars, or outdoor fixtures.
  • Look for the ENERGY STAR label.

Other ENERGY STAR lighting products to consider include:

  • Hard-Wired Fixtures for ceiling rounds, pendants, wall sconces, under-cabinet lighting, chandeliers, bathroom light bars, and outdoor applications.
  • Portable Fixtures especially to replace standard torchieres for about the same purchase price with huge energy savings over the life of the fixture.
  • Recessed-Can Fixtures in particular in new construction or remodeling as you may be able to produce the same light level with fewer cans.
  • Ceiling Fans with the ENERGY STAR label use energy efficient motors and advanced blade design to circulate air using less energy and may include CFL light kits.

Proper Disposal of CFLs
Because CFLs contain a very small amount of mercury, make sure you dispose of them properly.  To learn more about CFL disposal, click here.
